Cathedral celebrations

Our Cathedral Church of St Mary the Virgin has enjoyed two days of celebration over the past month.

The first was a ‘Mary’ day celebration on Sunday 19 August when anyone who had been associated with St Mary’s at any time – be it baptism, confirmation, wedding, past choir member etc – or who had the name Mary (or a derivative of Mary) was asked to make a donation towards the R1million needed for the roof and many other much needed repairs. To date R26 000 has come in.

The second celebration was their Patronal combined with a harvest Festival on Sunday 9 September which began with a wonderful service in the morning led by the Provost, Sharon Nell. Many gifts of fruit and vegetables had arrived beforehand and were incorporated with the flowers adorning the church and sanctuary. More gifts were brought forward, together with dedication cards, during the service.

The service was followed by a delicious luncheon at the Old Grey Sports Club. The dining-hall was packed, with many extra people arriving and having to be squeezed in. The excellent Clarendon Primary School band kept the guests entertained during the meal and then (a resurrected?) Elvis arrived to sing some of his favourite songs followed by the mike being opened for karaoke – with some very good voices being aired, including the Provost’s.

Christmastide celebrations

Sharon spoke to iindaba saying, “As the Cathedral is the ‘mother’ church of the diocese it is always good to welcome members from the other parishes, especially to the special celebration services such as those over Christmastide.”

The Cathedral Christmastide services are:
2 December 18h00 – Advent Carol Service
23 December 18h00 - Nine Lessons and Carols
24 December 23h00 - Midnight Mass
25 December 09h00 Christmas morning celebration

NMBCCC chosen to speak for Metro Christians
[ Zweli Tom ]

A significant decision was taken on Tuesday 4 September when the Christian organizations in the Metro met at St Stephen’s to consolidate their base. The prime purpose was to decide on which Christian formation should speak on behalf of Christians in the Metro. The meeting unanimously resolved that the Nelson Mandela Bay Consultation of Christian Churches (the brain child of St Stephen’s) should be the body speaking on behalf of churches in the Metro.

All the Bishops of the main-line churches were present; together with key leaders of the charismatic churches in the Metro, such as Jimmy Crompton, Dr Dave Pederson, Pastor Braam Botha, Prof Danie Mouton (a leader of the Dutch Reformed Church in the Eastern Cape) and Pastor John Scholtz of Harvest; etc.

“It was one of those rare days when I felt proud to be a Christian, said Zweli. “Once more, the Holy Spirit prompted me to echo the words of the psalmist:
“What can I offer the Lord for all his goodness to me? I will bring a wine-offering to the Lord, to thank him for saving me.”(Psalm 116:12-13).”

Remember the prophetic word for us in the year 2010 from Ezekiel 47:1-12).Isn’t God amazing!
